1,2,3 Poncho / Shawl

                              (In Memory of JoAnn Sampson © 2006 - 2010)

My daughter is 34 yrs old now, as has grown up wearing these poncho's as have all my Granddaughters.

These can be made for newborns up to XXXL if wanted, it depends on you and how big you want them (different size yarn & Hooks makes all the difference). They are great with matching hats as well.

By not sewing (whip-stitch) up the front you can have a wonderful shawl, whip st up the front creates a poncho with a nice collar. Add fringe to set the accent on the bottom of this shawl/Poncho or scallops. You decide.

I pray you enjoy this wonderful Classic as we have over the years.(As I told you, Mom started making these back in the early 1970's, and here it is the end of 2006 - 2010 and I'm pleased to share this with you)

PATTERN:
1, 2, 3 Shawl/Poncho

SPECIAL STITCHES:
(1 sc, 2 ch's, & 3 Dc's - all worked in ch 2 space from previous row)

[NOTE: each time you ch 5 at the end of a row you are actually beginning a new row, also, when you want to change colors, this is where you would do so]

For adult size: J hook

Ch 5, skip firts 2 ch, 1 dc in next ch, 1 dc in each of next 2 dc, ch 5 TURN.

This is a video of me trying to explain how to start this shawl / poncho for you. I hope my instructions at the bottom are enough for you to make this, but if not, please refer to the video...Jean

you will be working in back of ch 5 sts.
Skip first 2 ch's, 1 dc in next dc, 1 dc in each of next 2 dc's, (total of 3 dc) (sc in ch 2 sp [green yarn shows where this is] of previous row, ch 2, 3 dc all in same space), as shown above in photo

**ch 5 TURN, skip first 2 ch's, work 1 dc in each of next 3 ch's, sc in ch 2 space from previous row, ch 2, 3 dc (ALL in the same space), sc in next ch 2 space, ch 2, 3 dc in same space ** Repeat to end of row as shown BELOW in photo

TURN OVER AND BEGIN PATTERN by 1 dc in 3rd ch from hook, 1 dc in each of next 2 ch's,  *skip next 3 dc, {1sc, ch 2, 3 dc in ch 2 space}*Repeat to end, ch 5 TURN

TURN OVER AND BEGIN PATTERN by 1 dc in 3rd ch from hook, 1 dc in each of next 2 ch's,  *skip next 3 dc, {1sc, ch 2, 3 dc in ch 2 space}*Repeat to end, ch 5 TURN

Row 4 completed. See the 4 shells at the top, each shell represents a row.

[NOTE: each time you ch 5 at the end of a row you are actually beginning a new row, also, when you want to change colors, this is where you would do so]

TURN OVER AND BEGIN PATTERN by 1 dc in 3rd ch from hook, 1 dc in each of next 2 ch's,  *skip next 3 dc, {1sc, ch 2, 3 dc in ch 2 space}*Repeat to end, ch 5 TURN

CONTINUE working this pattern until desired length, then you can finish off leaving enough yarn to whip stitch up the front or just finish off.

Great with fringe or scallops

Deep Orchard Shawl started with 22 rows

Deep Orchard folded down to show you how to whip st up front to make a poncho, don't forget to leave enough space to slip over head

This makes a Beautiful gift for newborns with matching hats & booties
Just use baby yarn or sports yarn with a size F or G hook (I like a G & H Hook) I don't add fringe for these, I use dainty scallops

  1. Just finished your 123 shawl in black it's kind of a yarn hoggy K hook bates used a caron pounder plus another lg skein, but wanted it big it's nice and warm and also seems to stay put unlike some of my triangle shawls, I love it.

Now trying out trims for it shell's which work but also a 3/5/3 picot skip a few stitchs sc then picot again in the 3 chain in black shimmer yarn for a little sparkle, I am leaning towards the picots looks sorta like fringe in a way anyhow love the pattern and want to say many thanks..have made many of the child angel prayer cloths love those too..next project is your slouch hat :)and might start on yet another round ripple that is one ripple star pattern that seems to stay flat for me, oh and thanks for the heads up on the Amish books loving them too. Many blessings to you and yours and thanks again for a wonderful peaceful fun site.
p.s insert a Yorkie instead of poodle trying to jump on lap :o)

  2. I'm sad that most of the photos/diagrams are missing from this pattern. I'm hoping just the text will do to make mine.

    Thank you.

  4. I'm planning to make this but am wanting to use "yarn shop" yarn. What yarn weight and yardage should I look for?
    Thank you!

  5. Jeanarie,
I'm so excited to have found this pattern and am looking forward to making it. What yarn weight and yardage should I use if I use "yarn shop" yarn? Thank you.

  6. I used red heart 4 ply WW yarn, and I would buy 2 skeins of solid color and 1 of varagated for trim
