Preemie Hats

                                Comforting Babies, One Stitch At A Time."

Micro preemies hat will fit a plum

a small preemie will fit a tangerine

a preemie will fit an orange

a full term will fit a grapefruit

Hook Size E (F & G)
E hook for 1 to 2 pounds Rows 1 & 2 , sk rows 3 & 4, continue with instructions of 5-10
F hook for 3 to 4 pounds Rows 1-3, sk row 4, continue with instructions 5-10
G hook for 5 to 6 Pounds Rows 1-3, work row 4 same as 5 thru 10

Note: Beg ch 2 does not count as a st in this pattern.

Hat: Beginning at top of hat, ch 4, sl st in first ch to form ring.

Rnd 1: Ch 2, work 13 dc in ring, join with a sl st in first dc. 13 sts.

Rnd 2: Ch 2, 2 dc in each st around, join with a sl st in first dc. 26 sts.

Rnd 3: Ch 2 dc in first st, *2dc in next st, dc in next st, repeat from * around ending with 2dc in last st, join with a sl st in first dc. 39 sts.

Rnd 4: Ch 2, turn, *dc in first two sts, 2dc in next st, repeat from * around, join with a sl st in first dc. 52 sts.

Rnds 5 - 10: Ch 2, dc in each st around, join with a sl st in first dc. 52 sts.
DO NOT FASTEN OFF

Edging: (Ch 1 and sc) in each st around, join with a sl st in first sc. Fasten off. Weave in ends of yarn.
Turn up bottom of hat for brim.

Using an F or G hook and Baby Fingering or Baby Sprot weight yarn, ch 45; sc in the 2nd ch from the hook, and in each ch across row. Ch 1, turn; sc across the row. Continue until there are about 14 rows back & forth. Fasten off.

Whipstitch up the side, to join into hat base. With a needle and doubled yarn, work needle through the top row of stitches to gather the top; pull tight and tie into knot to secure. Tie it off and weave in ends.



(BASIC HAT)
J Hook with baby or sportweight yarn
K Hook with worsted weight yarn
Small/Medium/Large Sizes

Row 1: Wrap yarn tightly around tip of finger three times, push a loop up through center of circle and catch with crochet hook; CH 3 (counts as first DC here and throughout); 13/14/15 DCs in circle. Slip stitch to top of beginning CH 3 to join - do NOT turn.

Row 2: CH 3, DC in same stitch, 2 DCs in each stitch around; slip stitch to top of beginning CH 3 to join (28/30/32 DCs). Do NOT turn.

Row 3: CH 3; Work 1 DC in each DC around; slip stitch to top of beginning CH 3. Do NOT turn.

Crochet 9/10/11 rows or desired length -- slip stitch to join -- after completing length desired - TURN. For a boy, work single crochet, reverse single crochet or CH 2, Slip Stitch in next stitch around for trim. For a girl, work CH 3, Slip Stitch in next stitch around for trim. Join and fasten off -- weave in end -- turn up cuff.

Preemie size F or G Hook
Newborn size G or H Hook

Preemie Hat:
Ch 4, sl st into 1st ch to form a ring, ch 3 (ch 3 does NOT count as dc)
Rnd 1: Make 12 dc in ring, join with sl st into top of first dc. (total 13 dc)
Rnd 2: 2 dc in next st. Repeat from * around and join with sl st. (25 sts)
Rnd 3: Ch 3, dc into next st, *2 dc in next st, dc in next 2 sts. Repeat from * around and join with sl st.
Rnd 4: (Preemie size) dc in each st and join with sl st.
Rnd 5-8 Repeat rnd 4. (DO NOT FASTEN OFF after row 8)

~~~ 2 Trim Choices ~~~
TRIM #1:
Row 9: ch 3, dc in each st around- join
Row 10: Dc "or" sc in each st. around, join & fasten off
Fold up 2 or 3 rows for brim>

TRIM #2 Row 9: Ch 3, *fpdc around next st, bpdc around next st, *around, join on top of ch 3.
Row 10: ch 2, *sc in next st, sc 1, sc ch 1 around* fasten off, tuch in tails

FOR NEWBORN SIZE:
Rnd 4: Ch 3, dc into next st, *2 dc in next st, 1 dc in each of the next 3 sts. Repeat from * around and join with sl st.
Rnd 5: Dc in each st and join with sl st.
Rnd 6-9: Repeat rnd 5.
Final Round for Trim
Use either of the trim choices listed above


You can add a pompom and a ribbon woven through the brim row's of hats, or leave the hat bare. Both look cute! You can also vary the size of preemie hat just by using the f hook with the newborn instructions, or doing fewer sts at the top, adding more sts to make it larger. Play around with this and have fun.
